On Tuesday (11) morning, the market broke the news that Huawei consumer business CEO Yu Chengdong issued a notice of the establishment of the display driver product business department to develop and produce screen driver chips and enter the screen industry. According to industry chain news, Huawei started related projects as early as the end of 2019, and Huawei Hisilicon's first OLED Driver has been streaming. There has been no official response from Huawei.
Public information shows that the Display Driver chip (Display Driver IC, referred to as "DDIC") is one of the main control components of the panel, the main function is to send driver signals and data to the display panel in the form of electrical signals, through the control of screen brightness and color, so that image information such as letters, pictures can be presented on the screen. As a key component connecting the processor and the display screen, DDIC plays a very important role in image display.
Its main applications include small, medium and large displays. These small displays include applications in mobile phones, digital cameras, PDAs, gaming devices, MP3 players, GPS, navigation devices, medical devices, and digital photo frames, while medium-sized displays are commonly used in laptops, laptops, monitors, televisions, and laptops, while large display applications include signage, billboards, etc.
The latest report of Brandessence Research, an overseas research institution, pointed out that with the growing demand for LCD panels for smart phones, TVS and other electronic devices, the DDIC market is expected to achieve rapid growth globally, and its main growth engines include the increase in the demand for high resolution and integrated functions, and the decrease in the average selling price.
According to the above estimates, the DDIC market size was $451 million in 2019 and will reach $584 million in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.3% over 2019.
At present, the mainstream DDIC is divided into LCD driver chip and OLED driver chip. Among A-share companies, Zhongying Electronics is one of the few OLED driver chip suppliers in China, while Geke Micro, which recently applied for the listing of the Science and Technology board, ranked second among suppliers in the Chinese market with A shipment of 420 million LCD driver chips in 2019.
According to the previous relevant media organization, in addition to the above two companies, Giedis, display core technology, Yi Siwei, Yunying Valley technology, etc., are also cooperating with major panel manufacturers BOE, Vixino, and Huiguang, Huaxing Optoelectronics, etc., and some have started the mass production of DDIC.
However, from the perspective of the current global DDIC shipment distribution, China is still in a relatively preliminary stage. Part of the Huawei documents revealed today also mentioned that although China has now become a screen production and export power, screen driver chips mainly rely on imports, and BOE purchased screen driver chips for more than 6 billion yuan in 2019, of which domestic chips accounted for less than 5%.
According to CINNO Research data, in the global DDIC market share ranking in 2018, companies from South Korea and the United States alone accounted for more than 50% of the global market share.
Public information shows that at present, the DDIC process is mainly concentrated in 40nm, 65nm process, "Science and Technology Board Daily" inquiry of the domestic wafer manufacturing leader SMIC International website found that in its high-pressure process platform for DDIC, the products that have been released or have been in production. Technical nodes include 40nm, 95nm, 0.16mm and 0.3mm.
